AI and video

What is a video generation API?

A video generation API (application programming interface) lets other software create videos automatically by sending a request, without anyone working in a video editor. The request carries the script, a template and settings such as the presenter, voice and language, and the service returns a rendered video.

Example

A retail chain hires several hundred seasonal workers every autumn. The L&D team wants each new hire to get a welcome video that uses their name, their store and their start date, but recording hundreds of videos by hand is not realistic.

A developer on the HR systems team connects the HR information system (HRIS) to a video generation API. When a new hire record is created, the integration sends a request with a template ID and the new hire’s details as variables. Once the video has rendered, the onboarding email goes out with a link to it. The L&D team only has to maintain the one template.

How it works

A video generation API is a set of web endpoints that a program calls over HTTPS. Most follow a REST style, send and receive JSON, and authenticate each request with an API key.

A typical request flow

  1. Authenticate. The application includes its API key with every request.
  2. Send the job. The request names a template or includes a full script, plus settings such as the AI avatar, voice, language and any variables.
  3. Wait for the render. Rendering takes time, so the API returns a job ID straight away. The application checks the job status at intervals, or the API calls a webhook URL when the video is ready.
  4. Collect the video. The response includes a link to the finished file, which the application downloads, stores or passes on to another system, such as an LMS or an email tool.

Templates and variables

Most teams do not build every video from raw settings. They design a template once, with the layout, branding, presenter and fixed parts of the script, and mark the parts that change as variables, such as the learner’s name or store location. Each API call fills in the variables, so one template can produce thousands of personalized versions. Templates are usually built in the provider’s visual editor, so instructional designers own the look and the content while developers only handle the data and the triggers.

What a video generation API usually covers

Capabilities vary by provider, but common endpoints include:

  • Creating videos from a script, a template or a text prompt, the API equivalent of text-to-video.
  • Listing the available avatars and voices.
  • Translating a finished video into other languages.
  • Creating custom avatars or cloned voices.
  • Checking job status and downloading finished files.

Uses in training and HR

  • Personalized onboarding: welcome videos with each new hire’s name, team and manager.
  • Localization at scale: the same course rendered in every language the workforce speaks, a common use of video translation through an API.
  • Content that stays current: product or policy videos regenerated automatically when the source text changes in a content system.
  • Embedded video creation: learning platforms and training providers adding video creation to their own products.
  • Customer and sales messages: personalized videos triggered by events in a CRM.

What to plan before integrating

  • Review and approval: decide who checks generated videos before learners see them, especially for compliance content.
  • Consent: custom avatars and cloned voices need documented consent from the person they are based on.
  • Volume and cost: providers usually charge by video minutes or credits, so estimate monthly volume before automating.
  • Personal data: check which personal details, such as names and job titles, go to the provider and how long the provider keeps them, and confirm the setup with your privacy team.
  • Key security: store API keys in a secrets manager, never in client-side code or shared documents.
  • Failures: plan retries and alerts for renders that fail or time out.

Why it matters for L&D teams

  • Personalization without extra production. One template produces a version for every learner, store or region.
  • Video inside existing workflows. Videos come from the systems teams already run, such as the HRIS or LMS, instead of being made by hand.
  • Faster updates. When source content changes, the same automation regenerates the affected videos.
  • Consistent output. Every video comes from an approved template, so branding and structure stay the same at any volume.

How Colossyan helps

With the Colossyan API, you design a template video in the editor and export the ready-made API call for it. Anything you build in the editor generates the same way through the API, because the editor runs on the same endpoints. Variables personalize each video with details such as the viewer's name, and auto translation creates a version per language from the same template. Instant Avatars and voice clones are each created in a single API request, and teams that prefer no code can trigger video creation from Zapier.

Video generation API frequently asked questions

A video generation API lets software create videos without anyone opening an editor. Common uses are personalized onboarding or sales videos for each recipient, one training video rendered in many languages, product or policy videos that regenerate when the source content changes, and video creation built into another product.

Calling a video generation API directly takes some development work, such as handling authentication, sending requests and storing the finished videos. Teams without developers often connect to a video generation API through no-code automation tools instead, which start a video from an event such as a form submission or a new record in a customer relationship management (CRM) system.

Rendering time depends on the length of the video and the provider's capacity, so most video generation APIs work asynchronously. The application sends a request, receives a job ID straight away, and then checks the job status or waits for a notification before downloading the finished video.

An AI video generator is usually an app that a person uses to create videos in an editor. A video generation API gives other software access to the same kind of video creation, so videos can be produced automatically, in bulk or inside another product. Many AI video platforms offer both.
